Lindisfarne Stones

Lindisfarne Stones

Made for an exhibition about the Lindisfarne Gospels, Lindisfarne Stones takes motifs from the Gospels as its inspiration. A block of Portland stone hand-carved with a pair of interlinked animals is framed with a goldwork panel shaped to fit around the carving. More goldwork forms the sides and back of a box fully enclosing the stone.

The goldwork is couched in colour to form a repeating design taken from one of the Gospels’ cross carpet pages. This formal repeating design then breaks down around the edges before being repeated on the back of the box.

Technical details

Gold passing thread couched in colour onto linen to form a design, then used to form a box enclosing a carved stone piece.
