This unique piece of ecclesiastical embroidery is a processional banner made for presentation to Durham Cathedral, where it is now on display.
Completely hand embroidered, it consists of a central panel, repeated on the back of the piece, with an appliquéd central cross with satin appliqué detail, embellished with beading and goldwork.
The outer panels are covered in minutely detailed flowers in split stitch and goldwork. The flowers were worked separately on linen slips, before being cut out and individually applied by hand.
The Banner is a contemporary recreation of a lost Medieval original.
Double-sided processional banner in velvet, with appliqué, goldwork and beadwork.
