This three-dimensional piece is based on a design for a traditional Welsh dragon, and has been widely exhibited.

Completely hand embroidered, each section is worked separately, before being mounted on a thin card backing and assembled by hand. It is worked in or nué, where Japanese gold thread is closely couched using coloured threads, in this case shades of red, orange and yellow.

The Dragon’s underside and the undersides of the wings are couched without using coloured threads. The edges where the sections are joined are edged with gold pearl purl, which is also used as detailing along the sides.

Gold sequins have been used for the eyes; the mouth and the spines on the head are lined in red satin, and the teeth are gold kid.
