Inspired by images of a volcanic eruption, the bowl contrasts the vivid colours of molten lava with the dark shades of its drying crust. Spaces in the dark outer later of the bowl allow the hot colours to show through.
The two layers were worked separately, though using the same technique of creating a heavily stitched mat of free machine embroidery on cold water-soluble fabric. When the two sections of the bowl were completed, this was rinsed away, the layers joined, and the whole piece moulded to shape.
Moulded vessel of heavily stitched free machine embroidery.
