This large panel was based on a photograph of an iris growing in Ruth’s garden.
Each of the petals, leaves and stem are free machine embroidered and machine stitched to shape. Each piece was then hand applied to the background, carefully arranged to follow the form of the real flower as closely as possible. All the petals are attached at the base only, giving the piece movement.
A dark green background was chosen for contrast, and padded to create softness. The back of the panel is covered in a dark plain fabric, with a cord for hanging.
Silk velvet ground with free machine embroidered silk duchesse satin and silk dupion sections applied.
