As part of illustrating the articles elsewhere on the site, I’m now working on a piece of or nué for the article Goldwork – couching with colour and or nué (I’ve done the ‘couching with colour‘ part already).
‘Or nué’ means ‘shaded gold’, and is a form of goldwork embroidery where the entire design is covered with thread. The gold thread (or other metal thread – it doesn’t have to be gold) is couched with coloured threads very closely to form the design. If you haven’t come across it before, hopefully all will become clear as I go along.
Here’s the design I’ll be working on, drawn onto some pale green linen with fine Sharpies:
Some of the lines are a bit wobbly, but that doesn’t matter too much as they’ll be completely covered by stitching.
All the background, inside the box, will be a pale green, same as the linen; I’m using Madeira stranded cotton no. 1401. I’ve made a start on the stitching but haven’t got too far as yet:
There’s a very long way to go yet! Next time, I should at least have got as far as making a start on the feather itself.
